"I wouldn't say the Barge is anywhere near as organized. Not to say the universe is easily organized, but you have to higher standards when you don't have the 'advantages' of this ship."
The sudden and yet inevitable betrayal is just a basic understanding of how these things work, and another reason Mikodez is fine just running one sixth of a giant space empire. He can keep a handy list of likely betrayals.
He laughs. "You'll have to ask another warden that. I've never been satisfied with contentment. Nor could I stand for anyone else to be in charge of me. Following someone else's orders when I think I could do better isn't my strong suit, and I usually think I could do better."
He grins. "One of the reasons I'm not a military man."
He nods. The picture of Earth that he's been putting together is... very strange, but there are some parts that are merely incredibly backwards.
"You come from Earth, don't you?" It's not unreasonable as a guess. If he's done a little review of the network then it's because he takes his job seriously.
"Really?" Being interested in other people is important, so he's good at finding interesting things. He wonders if there are markers that Earth people use to tell the difference. There are some telling details back home, but some of his reading makes it feel as if the hexarch is sometimes more united than a single planet managed.
They have multiple calendars! Even if they don't mean anything.
'What Mikodez considers home' is the sort of deep, personal questions that he comes up with fun answers for for his therapists. It's also just the hexarchate.
"Hm. It's a space empire that covers multiple planets. Redundant, perhaps, but there are some that just have space stations." And different languages, so it's also a matter of convenience. "On the whole, the technology is more 'advanced' than what I've seen here." He looks at the back of the 'Sorry!' box, but he thinks the name probably means it's not for him. "We have a basic living income."
He laughs. "Even though it's not that large, the answer is still absolutely not. We wouldn't get anything done. The functions of our government are split between six factions, and even with that it can be difficult to get an agreement on who should be in charge of the faction."
"I am curious," he admits, taking the game to a nearby table and sitting down with it. He pulls the top off and blinks at the colors. "What in God's name..."
